A sacred Yindjibarndi creation story in VR.
The time when the world was soft.
Created under the leadership of Juluwarlu Group Aboriginal Corporation and cultural lead Lorraine Coppin, Marrga: Ngurra Nyujunggamu — When the World Was Soft is a newly completed VR and 360-degree immersive work filmed on sacred Yindjibarndi Country in the ancient Pilbara.
Narrated by Lorraine Coppin and featuring the sacred Burndud song and dance cycle with Michael Woodley, senior Yindjibarndi lawman, and his community, the work carries audiences into the time when the world was soft — when the Marrga Creation Beings shaped Country, Law, language, ceremony and responsibility.
The project extends Juluwarlu's landmark Yindjibarndi-led creation-story performance work using giant puppets, a practice originated by Lorraine Coppin in 2019 to help carry Yindjibarndi stories to younger generations and new audiences. First developed through community practice and performed for the opening of the Yindjibarndi Ganalili Cultural Centre, the puppet work later became a major cultural performance at Red Earth Arts Festival.
Windy Lighthouse Studios and ReddogsVR worked as immersive screen collaborators, translating Juluwarlu's cultural vision into 8K 360-degree cinema for XR, museum and educational audiences.
