Synopsis

What does it mean to belong, and where is home?

Created by Kurt Rettenmaier, KARL is a major Australian feature drama inspired by the life of Karl Rettenmaier, a German-Australian immigrant and builder interned at Holsworthy during the First World War.

Torn from his wife and children and branded an "enemy alien", Karl is forced into a brutal world of barbed wire, military control and underground violence. Inside the camp, he enters a vicious catch-wrestling circuit to earn money for his starving family, rising from reluctant fighter to unlikely champion as he confronts the question at the heart of his life: what does it mean to belong, and where is home?

Combining historical drama, physical spectacle and an emotionally charged immigrant story, KARL explores family, masculinity, exile, survival and the right to belong in a country still deciding who it is willing to call Australian.

Further details will be announced as the project develops.
